Fallapit Estate in Devon , near Totnes TQ9 7QF is now a residential development but when the place was a boys school it was a horrible place . Many of the staff were child abusers including the founder - Muriel OBrien - she did NOT have any teacher qualifications and started HER OWN school - St Thomas mores school . The school had several OFSTED inspections and was closed down in 1997 because the school failed to offer any standard of education and did NOT provide a safe or caring environment for children . There was a long list of failings - perhaps you could apply to OFSTED if you wanted a copy of the report . Muriel O'Brien was a criminal con artist and child abuser - she lied about her qualifications . She died before being brought to justice .
The school closed down based on the findings of the OFSTED inspection in 1996.
Since the school closed - some staff have been investigated by police for child abuse .
Historic abuse investigations are still on-going so it is NOT possible to name any of those staff or abusers .
staff came and went at st Thomas mores school - NO CRB and NO DBS check - anybody that showed up for an interview wearing clean tidy clothes - paedophiles worked at the school regularly .
If you asked in the local village of East Allington about the school - you might get various responses and hear stories - BUT its unlikely you will ever be told about the secret abuse that went on at the school . many elderly villagers were never happy about a school being their their village .
St Thomas Mores school was registered as a special needs school - for children with Dyslexia , ADHD , aspergers , autism and it was school intened to offer education to boys aged 8 to 16 .
Despite the gossip and rumours the school was NOT a borstal or a reform school - you can check - the school was classed as 'special needs school' as already stated , some elderly residents in the local village did not like the idea of a boys school in their quiet village .
The school was a much different place in the 1960's , 1970's and 1980's - in those decades there was NO such thing as a CRB check - nobody had heard of a DBS update - NO such checks existed at all and some of the staff working at the place either belong in prison or on a register for life .
Because there were No checks and no regulations for staff - this often meant that unsuitable people were able to get jobs at the school . Staff that were caught having sex with boys were quietly asked to leave - the school did not report abuse to police because the school wanted to avoid investigations and scandal .
The amount of abuse that went on at the school was of the kind documentaries are made of , when theres a documentary on the television about a care home or school where undercover experts expose abuse - St Thomas Mores School was the same as those place's - though abuse was covered up so easily because the boys at the school were young , vulnerable and 'easy' to manipulate by staff .
Boys did try to report abuse , boys did run away from the school and were punished for doing so by the school - if boys told police about abuse at the school - the police repeated word for word what the boy had said back to the school and the school would brand the boy a liar and he would be punished by the school . The school would also manipulate other boys to call the boy a liar and give them treats or reward for doing so . Staff manipulated and bullied boys at the school . Any boy that spoke out or tried to report abuse would then be targeted and bullied by staff .
Devon & Cornwall Police FAILED to investigate or keep any log of incidents at the school ..... Actually Devon and Cornwall Police had problems of their own with a paedophile working in the police force in Devon at exactly the same time abuse was happening at the school - despite complaints about the paedophile police officer, PC Danny Bryant continued to serve and abuse boys for decades despite official complaints from the victim and his family - there was different culture back then... and reporting abuse to police was pointless . It wasnt until 2013 that PC Danny Bryant was finally brought to justice after other victims came forward . A link to the BBC story below .
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-24851195
Boys knew they would be punished for saying 'nasty lies' about the school and it was that fear of punishment that kept other boys silent . To understand properly you would have to been there as a boy yourself and as mentioned already - it depended what year you were there - if you were at the school after 1991 your experiences might be very different as several staff had left or retired by then .
The school was started in the 1950s by an Australian lesbian Muriel Obrien , she herself had been in a mental institution in Australia and came to the United Kingdom along with her girlfriend a psychiactric nurse that she had met in Australia and the pair of them set about starting a home/ school specialising to care for mentally damaged or disturbed children that were not suited to mainstream school - there could be good money to be made from care , special needs children are 'expensive' and if youre running a care facility and running it the way they did - it was very profitable indeed . Muriel Obrien was a business women and was NEVER suitable to work with children at all really - she could put on a good act but she only cared about the money . MURIEL OBRIEN HAD NO TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS AT ALL - she taught classes in the school but was never trained or qualified as a teacher at all and since she was principal and in charge of her school - who would argue with her ?
there were No records or background checks in the 1950's - some people just seemed to slip through net .......these days a woman like Muriel O'Brien would probably be in Broadmore prison ... she was dangerously manipulative and quite a con artist . It was later discovered Muriel OBrien had No teaching qualifications but she had LIED for years and managed to keep that secret for decades .
Accommodation for the boys was poor , the boys dormitories were metal frame beds , lino hard floors and some rooms had a soft occasional chair but generally there was not much comfort at the school . The furniture was mostly tatty and second hand , the bedding was threadbare and mattresses were very old and covered in plastic covers . Running costs for the school were quite low since electricity and water were the only bills - the school was partly heated by oil heating but the house was always cold and very little was spent on heating . Most of the food was grown at the school on farmland and all the labour came from the boys - so was child labour . Housekeeping , cleaning and even building repair work was also done by child labour ( the boys) and there were no safety standards - children would be handling chemicals and doing mens work and they were forced into it - nobody actually wanted to do it - it certainly was child exploitation and child abuse .
The teaching staff were often untrained and low paid , some qualified teachers did work at the school but some were trained teachers but just not suitable to work in any school . Teachers would be drunk during the daytime and beat children , boys would be used like punch bags and some of the sick individuals working there belong in prison
NOT ALL THE STAFF ABUSED CHILDREN - BUT MANY STAFF DID KNOW ABUSE HAPPENED AND KEPT QUIET TO KEEP THEIR CAREERS - INDEED EVEN SOME OF THE STAFF WERE MANIPULATED BY MURIEL OBRIEN AND SOME SENIOR STAFF
Muriel Obrien sacked staff that had sex with boys .... that did happen .Muriel Obrien knew staff were hitting and beating children - it was often by her instruction - but she knew some paedophiles worked at the school and she even caught them abusing boys . It was never reported to police - Muriel Obrien just told the paedophile to leave and sacked them - the boy would be told to keep quiet about it and might have been given a treat like chocolate for his silence - Muriel Obrien did have favourites and was rumoured to have given lump-sum payments to some boys when they left school , to buy their silence - she did know how to groom and manipulate young boys .
ABUSE WAS EASY TO KEEP SECRET ...... Letters and telephone calls were ALWAYS monitored .
Letters and telephone calls were strictly monitored and boys were coached before being allowed a telephone call home - calls would be cut off - the parent would be told later by a phone call that the boys money had run out and the payphone cut them off - it was standard routine with the telephone - staff monitored all calls and boys knew if they started telling tales the call would be cut off .
Letters home were also checked before they could be sealed and all letters sent from parents were read by the school before the boy could read it - any sweets or money sent to the boy would be held in the office and the boy wouldn't be allowed to keep it himself .
A boy could NOT call childline - the telephone was a single pay phone for all the boys to use and was disconnected if there were no staff to monitor it . The payphone was located in a lobby area next to a staff toilet and staff would sit in the toilet while phone calls were made - listening to calls - there was
Photos were 'posed' and staged and obviously did not show any abuse or what the school was really like .......much like a holiday from hell - nice photos in the brochure but reality was different .
All seemed 'nice' in the brochure - the reality and life at the school was very different .
also an extension phone in the office the same line as the payphone .
boys pocket money would be taken from them by staff - so boy could NOT use the phone without pocket money . Having pocket money and being caught with it was punishable - the same if a boy had a packet of sweets he didn't have permission to have - the staff were control freaks .
The food in the school was mostly vegetables grown by the school , stewed and often stored in a freezer for months and cuts of the very cheapest meat . Breakfast was porridge and sometimes toast on a Saturday - as a treat boys could also have cornflakes instead of porridge on Saturdays . all other days it was porridge or nothing .Porridge might be healthy but the stuff the school cooked was revolting .
There would be watery orange squash or strong tea served in winter at morning break times but the tea never had any sugar or sweeteners and was made using dried milk powder even in the late 80's boys rarely got fresh milk at all .
A boy actually smuggled a packet of sweeteners into the school and was punished because he didn't like the tea and wanted to sweeten it and was caught - he was beaten so badly in the dining room - no boy ever tried again .
staff came and went at st Thomas mores school - NO CRB and NO DBS check - anybody that showed up for an interview wearing clean tidy clothes - paedophiles worked at the school regularly .
the building is called FALLAPIT HOUSE or FALLPIT ESTATE postcode TQ9 7QF and was formerly called St Thomas Mores School until it closed down in 1997 - local authorities did know of rumours about abuse at the place though no formal investigations ever got off the ground and it was decided no more funding would be given for boys to attend the school - so it closed .
i attended this school between 1962 and 1965, and will attest that this is a factual description of the place. the regime run by miss lloyd and miss o'brien was sadistic, and brutal. i would say miss lloyd was the more evil of the two.i witnessed children much younger than me being physically assaulted (not punished), for the slightest infaction of a rule or even being thought to have been doing so. i recall on incident where two masters held a 10 year old boy down so miss lloyd could vent her rage in slapping him about the ace and pulling his hair. this happened in the dining room in front of the entire school.
ReplyDeletei was in my last two years sent to "teach the junior " class. the school was more concerned about teaching us the one true religion, than giving us an education.i complained to my social workers , to the catholic rescue society and the bishop of plymouth in the mid 60s i was punished severely for doing so.
we were forced to queue naked whist miss lloyd walked about. and lined up naked so miss lloyd could check us out to see if we had any infections or crabs.
i do not agree that this was the norm for this period, i went through various state and catholic schools for my entire childhood. st thomas more school was in a league of its own, in poor conditions,(not spartan), brutality, and abuse

DeleteAppreciate your comment . For me the most frustrating aspect of being abused was that fact i couldnt telephone my family without a member of staff monitoring and listening to the phone calls . Everything was controlled by the school and there was NO privacy and nobody to report abuse to... Even letters home on monday mornings were dictated and proof-read by staff . I know boys made many failed attempts to report abuse to police - the problem was that police would repeat allegations back to the school staff and investigations went no further . The school ONLY investigated ITSELF . Police did NOT log or investigate abuse . It certainly WAS reported - but NOBODY was investigating and police FAILED to keep records back at that time and a Paedophile Police officer DANNY BRYANT worked at D&C Police at that time but has since been brought to .... The police have started investigating historic abuse recently but Devon and cornwall had a Paedophile police officer working among them at exactly the same time as abuse was happening at the school . Danny Bryant was brought to justice in 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-24851195

ReplyDeleteI went to the school in the late 80s early 90s I had a really bad injury what still affects me today the staff didn't do anything I had money going missing and shouted out on a regular basis I am 43 now I only spent two years at that school
ReplyDeleteI was at this school from 1964 to 1968. Yes all those comments and your write up brought back those awful memories of those years at STM. Some of this subject is quite mild as i do remember so very nasty goings on there and was often a victim of abuse and cruelty. I was know as the chief absconder as I run away so many times i do not remember how any times. I was well know to the Devon cops. I used to shop the culprits to the cops but when I was returned to the school I was met with smiles and a pat on the head from Lloyd and o'brien whilst the cops were there. Then when they departed I was bashed all the way to the shower block and given a cold shower while they watched. This was winter time. The marched off to the mediacl room for a dose of cod liver oil. Lloyd asked me what I lived on while on the run. I said turnips from the fields. She said you must be hungry. I siad I was. She said go to the dining room and wait for something to eat. I waited for over an hour then Lloyd brought in a plate of raw turnips form me to eat. She said if you are so fond of turnips you wont have to run away again to get them as I will make sure you have plenty now. So the cruelty carried on for all my years there I saw so many lads get beaten that it gave us a bond that will never break. They were my brothers and all we had was each other. I continued to abscond and eat turnips for the rest of my time at STM. I took the beatings and cruelty as it came and when I left I left that behind. It made me a hard man and there was no force that could break me again. If anyone got in my way thay suffered. It got me in to a lot of trouble in my early years. I have STM to thank for that. I went the as a bad boy so they tell me. I came out even badder.
ReplyDeleteI was there 83-91 Simon Elt
ReplyDeleteMisunderstood we were probably in the same year then as I'm 42 now. What's your name? If you don't want to say here can email me simon-elt@hotmail.com

Hello my brother went to this evil school against my mum's wishes, she was heartbroken.early 80s he was beaten and tortured, and we suspect raped, but he never actually said he was, bless he was never the same again, and lives in a care home..we phone Nd visit, all the time but those days are never mentioned ever....
ReplyDeleteSent there in around 66 67, 12 years of age , can believe what's been said about this place , I suffered very badly with asthma , but still had to go for country runs early morning come rain snow , mr Ryan was a cunt! For the want of a better word ' it describes him to a T..after the long run we had to jump into the lake 1 by1 ' if lake was frozen over ? The ice would be broken by the first unfortunate person to arrive , no quarter given . I've seen mr Ryan physically throw children in' in ice cold conditions! ( this was every morning before even the birds where awake.. the weirdo priest was a regular around the dormitory, he was always rubbing my back and squeeze me in places , not for long though , I took a fork from meal time and repeatedly stabbed at him when he tried this again unfortunately he wasn't seriously hurt .. but I got a serious beating for it , but I never backed down ' after several months of a didn't give a shit attitude, I think they gave in . My farther collected me at 1.30 am ( yes morning ) and gave loyd a dressing down ,, all I've read is true of that place and many more horror stories I suspect ... we should all get legal aid to prosecute , if not the owners ! Then the Catholic Church should be bought forward to answer , and also Devon police " we shouldn't let it escape to be forgotten, my exsprience there affected my whole life ! I'm sure it did yours " someone is responsible?

DeleteHi Vic James. Its always good to hear from the old boys. I was at STM from 64 to 68 although I recall a lot of what you have mentioned we dont remember you. Just to authenticate your claim could you please give me 6 names of the lads there and what we had for breakfast each day and name 2 teachers. Thanks look forward to your reply.
ReplyDeleteBERNARD JOHN WILSON
ReplyDeleteIf anyone reading this remembers me I went by the nick name WILLIE or titch
I was at stems from 1965 to 1974 I remember one sadistic teacher well not so much a teacher but he would take all the boys to the plantation Saturday morning for Boeing the biggest jungle of grass you ever saw and God help you if you where caught leaning on your hope. You got a beating. I remember on one occasion in the squash court doing press ups, there was on boy overweight and cuoldnt keep up with the rest of the class. Mr Rigby would hold a shiny stick under his belly and if he touched it he would lay it hard across his back we all felt really sorry for him. Eventually we made a collective complaint to Lloyd and obtain an he was sacked. We knew a single complaint would mean a strapping it later turned out that Rigby was an ex boreal trainer.after this at least two other teachers one after the other where molesting boys. There are so many travesties I still recall. Mr Gillet our choir master was the only teacher in my opinion to be genuine. I have a lot more to tell but I would like to hear from any other lads that where there at the same time as me. I am now 61 and still working I managed to rise above that awfull place and have done very well with my life despite finding out that obrien wrote in my last school report (this boy will never amount to nothing)well i well and truly proved you wrong bitch
Bernard what was your first Dormatory? As your nicknames are familiar
DeleteMy first dormitory was st Mary's on the same level as obriens study night masters cubicle was right outside our dorm
DeleteMy first dorm was st Mary's on the same level as Lloyd and obrien study the night masters cubicle was right outside our dorm
DeleteI am sure you are the same boy as I remember a tiny little chap who I called Dicky dormouse. He went straight to St Marys and I am sure he was about 5 or 6 or very near that age Bernard. I put him under my wing as he was lost by the enormity of somewhere so strange. It has to be you! Let me know. Pete
DeleteI was 7 yrs old and my best friends where Kevin young from South shields and John dowling from Liverpool kev and I where always getting into mischief and he was the class clown John looked out for me and taught me how to look out for myself. ReplyDeleteI was at this s***hole between 1971 and 1974. I made complaint's about the treatment there during Operation Lentisk where I was involved in a class action against Devon County Council and Forde Park school, among other's. The police, useless as usual, failed to contact me during 2016 and I have now made myself known to them. I am currently a Core Participant in the Independant Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. I would appreciate it if someone could give me the detail's of those police officer's who "investigated" this matter, so I can contact them direct. Thank you. I recognise some of the boy's and staff name's from the above comment's.

It was the strangest thing I had ever heared coming from an adult. It seemed as a member of the choir we had a sort of special status I don't know if anyone will agree but we did sing in some great places best of all Buckfast Abbey. I'll never forget that as I had the honour of singing an aria. Panis anjelicus. Not bad as me and david tunner had our hair sprayed gold with halos we must have looked a right bunch by todays standards. Lol. Bernie J Wilson (willie)

ReplyDeleteHi Guys, Am reading this with memories flooding back. I have tried desperately tried to forget my time there. The whole period of my time there although short (Thank GOD!!!), was so traumatic. I came from Cobham in Surrey, deemed malajusted this would have been in early 70's. My parents thought they were doing the right thing at the time.
ReplyDeleteThe even visited the school with me and we stayed in a B&B in East Allington before I came to the school. For some reason, I was sent to the library to write lines most nights before bed and the night guard then came and sent me to bed after lights out. I had a bottom bunk, there wer I think nine in the dorm. Showers in the morning I have never forgotten, freezing cold. The dreadful honey and brown bread at breakfast or marmite.
Mrs O'Brien was an evil con artist. Eventually I was sent home, woken early one Saturday morning, my clothes and case packed, driven by the night guard a bald fat guy to Totnes and put on a train to London with a letter from Mrs O'Brien, with some cash to get across London and get a train to Esher and then bus to Cobham. She never told or called my parents I was on my way home. My parents were shocked to see me walk in the house a kid of 13!!!!
terrible bullying and punching outside the ground floor TV room.
Hated the place, brought back so many terrible memories.
This year I turn 60, it's part of my life I have locked away and never discussed or told anyone. Wishing all of the guys and contributors the very best. I have only just found out some of the truth and what I suspected from reading the article and reviews. So many of us affected and scared for life!!
Hi whats your name? Yes I can understand and I would say most lads of STM have suffered at the hands of STMs School. I was there from May 1964 to Easter 1968. We had O'Brien and her sadistic lesbian partener Lloyd. I visited the school a few times after I left in the 9os. Miss O'Brien was still alive. Lloyd died in 1968 after I left. Well it seems you had a brief spell of hell and got off pretty light. Many of us have our own experiences which were traumatic and its been hard to put them out of our minds. Ive found that the trauma has hit me more as I got older. I was wild after I left STMs and it took me several years to calm down as I was heading for prison. That school damaged us all in some way and i really hope it helps you to chat on here as its not easy trying to tell others who will never understand. Take care

DeleteI'm sure this is the 'school' my brother went to in the late 70s. He only went for one term as he refused to go back. He would ring home on a Saturday evening but don't remember his calls being cut off. He would say he was so hungry and had to steal ice cream and sit in a cupboard to eat it. He used to tell my mum there were concrete blocks he would drop on his hands if she didn't come and get him (would he have got away with saying that on the phone?). The idea was sold to my mum as a beautiful Catholic boarding school for boys with great opportunities and loads of outdoor sports for 'troubled' boys. He was never in trouble he just stopped going to school about 12/13 yrs old. Our local authority in London sent her out to buy all fancy uniforms and different sports kits to send him off. I wonder if this is where he went. He never talked about it. He took his own life in 1992, does make me wonder.
ReplyDeleteYour brother's experience of the school seems to concur with mine.I had health problems and was sent there in the 1960s.
ReplyDeleteFrom all accounts, the regime was more relaxed there in your brother's time, but who knows? During my time, a climate of fear ruled the place and I witnessed appalling violence - not by pupils but by certain staff! The decent ones were clearly too fearful for their careers to say anything.
I am very sorry to read of your brother's untimely death and hope his time at the school did not contribute to the cause. Thank God, I emerged relatively unscathed and became a teacher in a better place.
Hi. Thank you for your remarks.Everyones contribution to our school day nightmares are welcome. I too was at STM in the 60s I may even remember you if we knew your name? Quite a few of us from the 60s are in touch also a few others from later times. We help each other to deal with what we went through as children, and thats what we were. Please do keep in touch. All the best Pete

ReplyDeleteI was at STM 1968 ..1972 I have recently instructed a barrister to sue Liverpool social services, for neglect as I and my Mother made several complaints about the abuse I suffered at the hands of STM staff, Liverpool social services took no notice, but they were responsible for my wellbeing and failed in their duty of care.
ReplyDeleteI remember you as Keneth Capper. You were there same time as me. I seem to remember you where singled out for some kind of punishment from time to time.
